Mr Woodward was speaking the Organization for International Investment's annual dinner at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Washington D.C. last week.

He added that he asked Mr Gore - who was vice-president between 1993 and 2001 - about Bill Clinton's administration, reported The Hill.

Climate change advocate Mr Gore told Mr Woodward the public knows around 'one per cent' of what happened during that time.

'I kind of died inside and have to confess to having an unclean thought,' Mr Woodward said of the revelation.

Mr Woodward then asked how much Americans would know about the administration if Mr Gore wrote a memoir. 'Two per cent,' he replied.
