Why did GM massively expand the Hummer brand right as gas prices shot up?

Is GM management simply stupid? Why would anyone even consider giving these dangerous morons government money? GM should be allowed to go bankrupt because it is simply a bad company that makes bad decisions - wouldn't you agree?

I would say that they were incredibly short sighted. But, vehicles like the Hummer have a huge profit margin. Those cars were bringing in buckets of money.

I think a lot of the blame goes to the Federal Government. The Bush administration imposed relatively low MPG requirements on American Car manufacturing and vehicles like Hummers and SUVs were excluded from any MPG requirements.

We as a country encouraged GM to build gas guzzling cars and SUVs whereas the Japanese Government gave incentives to their car manufacturers to build more gas efficient cars. We did the exact opposite.

Because they knew gas prices were artificially raised for the election.

Because the Republicans gave this vehicle a special, business tax break. Also, Arnold Schwarzenegger loved them and you know how we love celebrities. They were the ultimate expression of the SUV fad that consumed nearly everyone be they a tiny house wife or her macho husband. In short, it made absolutely no sense what so ever.

hmm, maybe because bush gave anyone who bought one a tax break?

I do not agree with you about them going bankrupt. How many other jobs rely on them? Do you know? At least 3 million jobs in this country depend on the big three. That is a lot of people who will be on the unemployment line. Would you like to pay for them? I rather see them keep their jobs and stay economically sound in this recession. The least amount of people loosing their jobs and not paying taxes makes this recession that much easier to get out of. I don't want to see us get into another depression.

They like a lot of other business in this country cannot get their usual operating loans because the banks are not giving out money anymore like they used to. You cannot take a drop in sales and then go through the aggravation of not being able to work with a bank and be expected to survive. Small business go through this everyday and that is why so many of them are closing their doors.
