They wanted to jump on the T20 bandwagon but they did not show much foresight. As can now be seen, even the IPL and CLT20 are starting to lose viewers as people become sick with the overdose of T20 cricket tournaments and indeed T20 cricket itself! The game has lost its novelty value and it is being exposed as an underwhelming format!
Furthermore, CA reaps millions of dollars of easy money each year merely by being part owner of the CLT20. They were therefore not in financial trouble to justify creating the gimmick known as the Big Bash. Indeed, due to their financial security, they had the freedom to focus on building strong Test and ODI teams after the retirement/decline of the 'Golden Era" players. But they chose profit for the sake of profit and now look at the state of the Australian national team.
Finally, a lesson must be learnt: creating a cheap immitation of an original successful model hardly ever works. Even if the IPL were to lose 75% of its viewers, it would still have a far bigger market than the Big Bash and thus be able to sustain itself. Big Bash is therefore a cheap and probabaly unsustainable immitation!
This all points to Australia's overall decline and loss of self-respect in pursuit of profit. I mean, for example think of Andrew Symonds making a fool of himself going and participating in India's Big Boss show after all the "monkey-scandal" a few years back. What a farce!
