Why did baseballs older games not ever show the score?

Why is it that now when I watch baseball games on tv there is always a box on the corner of the screen that always shows the score, the count, how many are on base and how many outs there are but this was only there for the past few years. Why is it that about 10 years ago when the games were shown on tv there was no box that showed anything and you had to watch everything and you have no idea what the score is until the inning is over. Why would they do this?
If you watch a game that was recorded about 10 or 20 or 30 years ago, why was there no box that showed what the score is?
