Why did Abraham Lincoln keep a goat or cow on his property?

I'm guessing it's for milk?
I heard something about how he kept a cow or goat on his property at all times.
 
I don't know the exact reason. Your first answer is one. The second is for supply on demand since going to the store was further then it is now and refrigeration was a block of ice. And if you live outside the city limits it may be tax-exempt but otherwise it is not allowed.
 
if you have a farm animal, you dont have to pay taxes on your land.
rules are a little different now, i think you have to own 3 cows to be tax exempt.
