Why couldn't they see stars?

If you look at many of the pictures from the first walk on the moon there are no stars. When questioned later about this the astronauts said they don't remember seeing stars. The moon has a very thin atmosphere so they should have been able to see the stars perfectly. Does this prove the first moon walk was faked?
