I heard that the vibrations hurt the fish... But that could have been a lie... Plus, it probably scares them!

sound travels much faster in water than in air.. so when you tap it.. the whole entire tank is filled with sound! And they don't know the source! (maybe) But, i know this from scuba diving. Don't scare the poor fish with 5 second memory!!
