Why can't we lose the "Red & Blue" mentality and discuss issues based upon the facts?

I sat down with a friend the other day who is diametrically opposed to my political views. We agreed to take a hot button issue (health care reform) and look at the facts. We read through key points in the proposal and looked at how this would affect everyone involved. We consulted a conservative web source and a liberal web source and compared claims. We looked at a neutral non-politicized analysis of the same thing. We didn't scream at each other, and we arrived at a mutual agreement that we both think the legislators could do better! We agreed to contact the lawmakers involved and let them know of our feelings.

Wow. A productive and civil meeting between a radical liberal and an arch conservative. Imagine that!
