Why can't TV broadcasts sync the image with the sounds?

When listening to live or taped tennis matches, mostly ones from overseas (I'm in the USA), you'll often see a player hit the ball, and then, as much as a second off, you'll hear the sound of the ball being struck! Of course, the same is true with most other foreign broadcasts, including the news (just watch CNN or BBC when reporters are shown from overseas).

I've never understood why TV broadcasters don't simply delay the image by the necessary fraction of a second to get it in sync with the sound, especially since the technology to do just that has been around since the 1960's (FWIW, I was a computer programmer for a company that produced systems for the TV/cable/satellite industries. I had the "ear" of quite a few top TV executives, back in the day, but it never occurred to me to ask them this question, and, of course, none are around or available to me, today!)

Any ideas?
