Why can't my Macbook keep a wireless signal?

I keep it in my bedroom and trying to get a signal is like playing with rabbit ears on an old TV. I have to restart it about 3 times to get just two bars, and when it's only on one bar, it won't do anything on the internet. I have to hold it up in the air sometimes, and once it gets all four bars, it goes down to one with a slight movement. I'll have it right next to the gateway at times, and it still won't do anything.

I used to have a Compaq laptop that always keep a signal, never died. Even when someone was on the main desktop, it still held strong. Stormy weather, a busy server, it never disconnected.

The Macbook is about 5 years old, it was a hand-me-down. I'm not really sure what model it is. It's just a plain white laptop with OS X. I installed a bunch of updates and whatnot, but it just cannot keep a signal.

PS: Mac fanboys, keep your claws at bay. I'm not saying PC is better or Mac is bad, it's just a little technicality that I want to know how to fix.
