Why can't my games that I've downloaded on Steam handle good video quality?

I have downloaded about 8 games through steam, and all of them are very choppy when i run them with anything other than the lowest video settings, I have other games that I have the cds for and i can run them on high settings fine.

im not sure all the info about my comp you will need but this is what i know...

i have:
CPU
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
