Why can't my computer produce sound but only does during startup ?

I'm using a Vaio colour. And my computer can't seem to produce any sound except when i am logging into my user account at the beginning. My volume mixer shows that everything is working fine.. but no sound seem to be coming out of my com both in web browser and my notebook itself..
