Why can't I sync my Motorola Razr to my computer?

I just got a USB cable to sync my Motorola Razr V3xx to my computer which is a Windows 7 operating system, but it is not working; the computer is recognizing the cable but it it just isn't syncing. Any reason why? Do I need special software to sync my phone? It's rather frustrating that I can't. Please, serious answers...
