why cant i see my bristle brush preview in photoshop cs5?

i just got adobe photoshop cs5, and when i go into painting mode and try to toggle the briste brush preview on, it just shows the circle with a cross through it (like you cant hit that button). so im wondering if i have to set up my tablet to do that, and if so how? if not, how do i use it???
