Why can't i play pc game on full screen with DVI-D cable while on lower resolution?

My BenQ T2200HD has resolution of 1920 x 1080 but my computer is not powerful enough to play games on maximum resolution so i always lower down to 1280 x 720. My question is why if I use DVI-D cable on my monitor, my game always appear in the middle of the screen and there are black borders around the game. It does not happen when i play with VGA Cable
