Why can't I IM this mobile number?

On AIM I have some cell phone numbers to IM/text my friends. This morning I had IMed/Texted one of my friends fine and then I signed out. Tonight I log in to IM/Text them and it said they were offline? How is it possible for a cell phone to go offline... I know for sure that the person was NOT logged into mobile IM. I was sending text messages from AIM.

It's weird because they were shown as offline and my other friends are still all online...

Was I blocked or something?
