why can't I connect my laptop to wireless net?

I bought a new toshiba laptop(A665-s6084) from Tigerdirect for $592. Family has qwest wireless(radio type 'g'), and laptops can access net, but I try and connect within like 20 ft. but can't...says something like "problem with network adapter or access point", and only "fair" signal strength, but it seems it might be the laptop. What's the deal?

Turn on the wireless switch right click the small computer icon in system task tray at bottom right of screen, click view all wireless networks, click yours, enter password if secured network, click connect. Reset the wireless router and modem if above does not work and then try again.
