WHY can't hamsters eat sugary cereal (captain crunch)?

I'm not sure if this is the reason, but imagine the proportions.
Even one of those little pieces of capn crunch would be about the equivalent of a human eating something made of almost pure sugar about the size of our heads. And that's only if they ate one!

Also I know that certain breeds of hammies are diabetes prone.
 
My boyfriend fed our hamster those colorful circle cereal pieces and I was worried it wasn't healthy for her so I looked it up online. Every article says sugar is bad for hamsters but won't explain why.

If you can give me links that would be cool, cuz my boyfriend thinks it's perfectly safe considering he used to feed his hamsters pure chocolate and "they didn't die"
