Why can't college education be free in the U.S.?

i mean, we're students, we want to learn about the things that we chose not how the financial aid system works...who keeps it that the students and their families have to pay, why can't the government pay for it? The education system won't be worst...please when you answer no politics
yea guess the first answer is right...guess we all have to "pay" to be college educated....sad.
