Why can't Americans think straight when they discuss leftwing / rightwing politics?

They can reason why we're in wartime just fine, but as soon as you bring up partisanship, their perception of reality becomes totally contorted beyond recognition. I think they just WANT the other side of the isle to be the villan so they conjur up a villan.
