Why can someone be interested in financial markets?

other than gaining big money, fast, or having a career out in it.
what is so appealing about the financial markets: stocks, bonds, shares, currencies, etc.. is it the thrill of figuring out what wins? or is it the logic of it all? is it addictive like gambling?
it is a genuine question, i need it for a research.. thanks
