Why can’t I disconnect the battery from my 2002 Ford Escape?

I own a 2002 Ford Escape XLT with only 5000 miles on it. I don’t, or can’t, use it much so I’ve got some problems with the battery because it gets discharged, although it has never failed. It is still the original battery. The Ford dealer told me not to disconnect the battery because the computer will erase its program or something. Why can’t I disconnect it? Is what they say at Ford so critical? It would help me so much to disconnect it!
I keep my truck indoors so theft is not a problem.
