why buy a high end nokia for data?

Hello, i have a dilemna; i am interested in buying nokia nseries phones, but if they dont operate on 3G, then whats the point? Take the N73, seems like the perfect phone to me, but since internet browsing is important to me wouldnt it be lacking in terms of speed? It seems that GSM cant compare to Sprint and Verizon in terms of data transfer speeds......is this going to change?

yes but sadly no nokia phones support cingulars 3G bands, with the exception of the N75 which is not out yet, and the N80 PROTOTYPE. best phone for cingulars data network is the HTC TYTN at the moment.

at the moment, you're correct. I've ranted on this NUMEROUS times in my blog.

However, having the N73 on Cingular, it's great for most things. Obviously streaming multimedia is a bit sluggish, but for web browsing and downloading stuff, it's not bad at all.

And it also depends on what you're willing to sacrifice to have that fast speed. I tried the BlackJack. Purely the device, it's freakin fantastic. Form factor, that scroll wheel, oh man, beautiful. However, Windows Mobile is an OS that I have tried 3 times now, 2x phone-based and 1x touch-screen and I simply can't see how it is usable. No copy and paste on the phone, you can't automatically (WITHOUT USER INTERACTION) sync via bluetooth, and you have to connect it to a PC to do nearly anything. I lasted about a week with each and simply had to get rid of it and come back to S60.

So I'm willing to sacrifice a little speed for the usability. And I'm no cheapie on data. I blow through over 450mb/mo on my N73 without tethering.

wow sweet.... well i have used the treo's on cingy before and it didnt seem too bad back in '03. i have been using my friend's blackberry pearl on t-mobile while deciding what to get and its decent. How would cingy's speed compare with t-mobile's? im just worried of feeling inferior to verizon and sprint if i encounter them though...... =(

Cingular and T-mobile both have EDGE (which is the most you'll be taking advantage of) so it'll depend on the usual coverage and whatnot factors.

And don't be ashamed to stand up to CDMA weenies. When they confront you, ask them what websites they are allowed to visit on their phones? Cause you can go to any. Can they switch phones at will? No. Can they transfer stuff via bluetooth? No.

I haven't yet gotten video to stream, but I think that's more a wireless limiation rather than on my phone, cause i've never gotten it to with any non-3g phone.

They are 3G phones everywhere else in the world, just not USA/Canada band. And that seems to be due to a Nokia - Qualcomm patent/royalty dispute (why Nokia has virtually abandoned the US 3G offering).

no cut and paste?

Not so sure about that. I asked my friend to send me *something* from a web site. So he browsed to it, cut and pasted the text into a text message and sent it.

So at the very least, he was able to cut and paste text from the web browser into a text message.

He's using a Telus Win device.

touchscreen devices obviously can, but the non-touchscreen ones don't, at least built-in. There's a 3rd party app that'll let you do it, but it's not real easy to use, and only usable in editable text fields, so you have to type it out first, anyways, before you can copy and paste it.

I am under the impression that Tmobile EDGE is faster than Cingular's. I heard that a few times and have experienced the same when running a internet speed test on my N73 on Tmo and my friends' E62 on Cingy. Then again, I could be wrong.

I do tons and tons of web surfing on my N73 on Tmo's EDGE and I love it. Of course faster would be better, but you have to remember just how much stuff the screen will display at one time and also how quickly the phone's processor will render pages. Most of the time I feel as if that's the bottleneck more than the EDGE speed. Either way: I really love browsing the web on the phone, as stated above.

The other big variable when it comes to speed differences is location and time. I get really fast speeds late at night but only decent speeds during the day on T-Mobile. EDGE itself is dependent on these variables more than the speed of the networks EDGE capabilities as a whole.

Can anyone confirm this?

No chance of resolution? So I can't have an amazingly high-quality 5 megapixel cameral and 3G too? Am I doomed to stay with my 6682 until someone make a phone worth upgrading to? I'll keep it, buggy and all, rather than spend $$ for another EDGE phone with a slightly better camera.

stay tuned to Symbian-Guru for the Olly and Guru shakedown of why this is. Seriously, it's all saved in a Gtalk conversation right now but it's shaking my world up just trying to digest it all.

You can try your odds at finding an N80 prototype on eBay with Cingular's 1900 UMTS band? Or wait for the N75 or N76? Those seem to be the best options if you have to have an S60 phone with 3G in North America.
