Why be a stay-at-home mom when your kids are over 12?

I have a couple friends who are SAHMs of older school kids. I don't want to judge and never ask them to justify their choice to stay home. However, they have shared with me some of their reasoning, such as "I want to be there when the kids get home", "I want to be there just in case they come home sick", or "I stay so busy every day with cleaning, errands and laundry that I wouldn't have time to work". These statements make me scratch my head because as a working mom I was able to keep up the domestic chores, used vacation and sick time to be with my kids, and my husband and I were always home within an hour or 2 of the kids getting home. Personally, I think I would feel guilty as a SAHM of older kids because I would feel I wasn't carrying my weight. I understand all situations are different, but am just curious what other folks thought about this topic, generally speaking.
