Why arent my ps1 game saves working with my ps2?

So i bought metal gear solid for ps1 to play on my ps2 and i bought a generic ps1 memory card for saves, when i save it completes the save fine but when i load mgs back up it says i have no save files, whats going on? is it cuz the card isnt by sony?
i do have a ps2 card in but the game doesnt read it
