Why are web design and animation skills so highly regarded within the graphic...

...design industry? I am currently finishing my first year of university studying graphic design. I have seen a few sources that claim animation and web design are great skills to have when fighting for the opportunity to be offered a graphic design job.

But why is that? Why is animation and web design so highly regarded, to the point where it is claimed that having these skills will ensure you have the best opportunities for graphic design jobs? Could it be because it is more intricate and on some levels, more difficult?
