Why are US College programming textbooks dumbed down?

I did a VB.NET course recently using a US textbook as the main reference text. The material was seriously dumbed down compared to professional books on the subject. Entire chapters were devoted to simple things like different looping techniques. Why do colleges do this? They may graduate more people but those people aren't going to have the skills needed by industry. Chances are, they'll never even get a job unless they do extensive additional study on their own.
