Why are spiders afraid of horse chestnuts?

Hi.

I've read online that if you ant to get rid of spiders in your house, place horse chestnuts around.

Apparently they're scared of them?

If this is true and not an Old Wives Tale, then why?

Do they smell bad to them? Or do the spiders assume it's something out to get them?
