I read an article on Yahoo that there were very big protests in South Korea because their President has approved U.S. beef imports. The article did not explain much on the motives of the protests. It briefly stated that it was partly due to health concerns after the mad cow disease scare but the descriptions of the protests made it seem there might be other issues aside from that.
Were the protests solely about the U.S. beef industry and the possibility of mad cow disease? Are other U.S. imports also at risk? Is there are a larger message the protests are trying to send? Any answers welcome as I just want to understand the situation more.
