Why are so many people under the impression that lawyers make loads of money?

Whenever I talk to people about lawyers (I plan on going to law school), the first thing they say is "Oh, dude, you'll get rich doing that. You'll be rolling in money!" But the thing is...lawyers don't make that much. I mean, I live in California, and at a medium-big law firm, you're going to start out at $125,000 plus bonuses. While not a bad salary, you're definitely not wealthy, and even less so considering California is expensive. So why do people always assume that lawyers make a lot of money? I'd just like some ideas, because I'm curious. Thanks! [:
No, I'm not saying it's not a lot of money, I'm just saying that sometimes people act like it makes you "wealthy." Which it doesn't. That's all I'm saying. [:

I don't know what world you're living in, but living anywhere in the US, you can definitely get by with 125,000 a year (PLUS bonuses).

My mother makes about 30,000 and she supports me and sometimes supports my brother who just moved out last month.

So saying that 100 grand isn't a lot is really pushing it.

I'd be happy with that amount for years and years to come if I had a job that gave it.

I don't know about Cal, but the average lawyer makes $250-@350 an hour;; pressed for time, I would be assuming that the lawyers in Cal are spending more of their time vacationing than practicing;; & considering how many lawyers are out there, well, I guess you can say it's highly competitive?? I would also assume it depends on what type of law you get into...
