Why are road bikes called road bikes?

It does make things confusing; why aren't they simply called racers & tourers?
But the term "road bike" only refers to skinny-wheeled racing bikes; it excludes hybrids, town & country bikes, folding bikes, comfort bikes, shopper bikes, "butchers" bikes, cruisers, choppers, city bikes, electric bikes, tricycles, recumbant bikes and traditional/classic bikes.. all of which go on the road!
 
Road bike usually referrers to racing bikes, that is their primary design. Other bikes that can be ridden on the road have other uses and are named for that purpose.
