Why are people saying it's getting harder to get into to college?

I got into a 4 year in state college with a 2.2, that's with an associates. My roommate, who is also in state, doesn't have an associates, didn't take the ACTs or the SATs, graduated high school with a 2.0, didn't do any sports and still was able to get into a 4 year college.
