Why are people finding my site in search engines?

Ok well I've been building websites for a number of years now, but most of my traffic has always come from advertising. I never worked much on SEO so very few of my visitors came from search engines. Now I decided to give SEO a try for a new site I just built (it's an article site, various articles I've written).

Here's what I don't get: People are finding my site by searching for certain keywords. I'm using Analytics, and I see the keywords/phrases they are searching for in Google. But when I search for those same keywords in Google, the pages that they are landing on are on pages that are really far back in the search results.

Like for example, if I see someone searched for "dog food" in Google and found my site, I will also try searching for "dog food" in Google, but I see that it's not on the first page of search results. It's actually on the 21st page of search results. I seriously doubt people are going through 20 something pages of results everyday. Now my theory was that may search results are different for people in different countries and that's why. But majority of them are from the same country as me, USA.

Why are they finding these pages that are indexed so far away from the first page of results???
