Or worse, believe someone owes them because of their history?

Why should you be ashamed of something that happened before you were born and was in no way your fault? If you go back far enough every race/culture/religion has something bad in its history.
How can black people say white people owe them for slavery, when it happened before the current generation of white or black people were born? (just as an example)
Obviously people doesn't mean every single person in the world.

Lets take slavery in America for example shall we? The left and the Democrats in this country act as if the USA was the only country on earth to hold people as slaves and that only blacks were singled out to become "human mules". Nothing is further from the truth. Man through out history has enslaved others to his own ends. The Romans , Egyptians,Greeks, Persians, Chinese for example all had slavery as a norm in their culture. England and Europe had white males and females as indentured servants as did the USA. Europe was full off fiefdoms and something called serfdom which is basically forced slavery to a lord or "master" if you will. African , North and South American tribes routinely raided each other and took slaves . In fact from the 1600's till the 1800's more blacks were shipped as slaves to South America than to the North American continent. And they were more than likely forceibly taken by black african slavers. Yet blacks in this country have been taught to believe that it was they alone in the world who were sold into bondage. Its not true and is a fallacy.

This question is subjective.

For example, consider the grandchildren of Nazi SS officers. Many of them live in the US. Generally speaking, society dictates that Nazis, especially SS, were bad. Thereby giving their descendants a sense of ‘historical’ burden or responsibility.

Consider slavery in history. Historical Japan, Rome, Egypt, USA, Middle East, Greece, African Nations, Native Americans, etc… all have institutions of property of forced labor. In most cases slavery grew was the result of warring nations or tribes conquering another territory. Slave trade evolved as human technology evolved.

It is a common misconception that during the Colonial era that African Slaves were enslaved after the ‘white man’ captured them when in fact they were enslaved by neighboring African tribes/nations who conquered other African Tribes/nations/territories who then sold them to the colonizing countries who migrated west, though there are instances of being ‘captured’. In fact a lot of slaves included defected ‘whites’ as well. With that in mind, statements like ‘whites owe blacks for slavery’ are contradictory because many white Americans have no captor ancestry from Colonial era Americas (emigrated post 1850s), also with that logic, Africans owe blacks for slavery too.

Sidetracking aside, I feel that a person should not bear the burden of their ancestry. Besides, there are a lot of things to embrace in all cultures, even your own, whatever that may be.

I don't think that we are ashamed of our heritage but the people who owned slaves and such SHOULD be! Maybe if we had the opportunities then that we have now we would be better suited to be able to have generational assets!

i agree with you. i mean white people don't "owe" black people ANYTHING. i don't condone slavery at all but, when white people used blacks as slaves it was BLACKS who sold their fellow blacks to whites as slaves, yet when SOME blacks say you owe me this or that its CRAP! whites don't owe anything. you cant blame someone for something their ancestors did.

History, try right now us everyone we have damaged the earth more than anybody ever in history,in 50years there will be no fish in the sea, think it's time start thinking about the future and how make it green,or we will all be history.

"british army veteran" is, as is often the case, absolutely correct! we should understand our history, and accept it for what it is, warts and all

slavery was a stain on mankind; regardless of where, when, and by whom it was practiced-no one nation or race holds a monopoly

what we need to answer is this:

do we want to own our past, or do we want our past to own us?
