Why are my tetra fish turning orange/brown?

Me and my mom have 5 zebra tetra, 7 neon tetra, 5 black neon tetra, and 8 head-light/tail-light tetra's in a twenty gallon tank. And recently our fish turned kind of a dirty orange/brown after awhile of not cleaning the tank. I know its not good for the fish, but we've been really busy and only just got the chance to clean the tank.
Is there any real reason why the fish would turn orange/brown? And if so is their any medicine we can give them to help them feel better and get their color back?

(Also, we had two fish die, and we didn't notice them untill they had a mucky white goo around them.)

The best medicine in this case is clean water.

Fish lose color when stressed, especially from poor water quality. Adding any sort of chemical will only compound that stress.

You'll probably want to do a few more partial water changes in the next few days since you let it get so bad.

When the fish are feeling better they will color back up.
