Why are my imported video clips on windows media player so short?

Is there anyway that I can change the lenght of time that the video imports? For example I have one video that's 30mins long and when I import it into windows media player some of the clips are only 1 sec long. So I have like 20 clips of a 30min video. Is there anyway I can change this?
