Why are my buttons in flash not working when exported to a swf file?

i'm just doing some simple buttons... such as

on (release) {
gotoAndPlay ("direct", 1);
}

but for some reason my buttons work when i change my settings to allow simple button in Flash but then when I export as a swf file, the buttons no longer work...
I'm REALLY annoyed and confused...
Does anyone know why this is happening?

PS: i'm using Flash 8
