Why are my browser speeds faster tethered to USB vs. wireless on WiFi

through my android phone? Just installed my wireless tethering app on my HTC Magic 32B, and with Speedtest.net resolved very similar UL/DL speeds either hard connected via USB or tethered wireless through the new installation. However, when connected via USB, pages and browsing speeds are considerably faster--why is that?

Please educate. Appreciation in abundance!
