why are Muslims more interested in censoring than discussing controversial topics?

is free and open debate a threat to them? for instance why would they take offense if I were to liken the quran and the prophet mohamed to the dogs bollox (an expression which would be regarded as a superlative compliment in the UK. Surely their spiritual teachings gives them sufficient equanimity and tolerance to overlook such idiomatic idiosyncracies in favor of the underlying genuinely well meaning and sympathetic coment?
