Why are most religious figures always portrayed as male?

Most religious texts explain that God and the angels have no gender. Satan is also portrayed as male, but "he" is a fallen angel. Is there any other reason than the fact that men were more important than women before the 20th Century?

And Virgin Mary is really ever talked about or looked up as "powerfull" and still in the story she is nothing but a sex object.
