Why are many (or most) people in the US so vehemently opposed to health care reform?

It is quite evident that health care is a free market failure, allowing those who cannot afford insurance to go without.

What is it about a state-run system that is so abhorrent? Surely when 50m of your own American citizens cannot get access to adequate health care there should be change. A state sponsored system would even save you money and allow universal access.

Arguments of a superior system are quite frankly laughable, infant mortality rates are much higher than that of Britain and France, a fundamental, integral aspect of health care.

It confuses me to why this is resisted? Is it some kind of Cold War fear of Big Government that still exists?
