why are chat sites dangerous?

my friend is a little upset with me for telling him that the chat site he's going on is dangerous... i guess its just my opinion, but i know there has to be a reason i mean.. weird random people just talking to you... they could be lieing about anything they tell you. right?
 
If you let them be.

Obviously you shouldn't be giving out any personal information like where you live or your phone number.

But realistically if you be smart about it, your still in the safety of your own home and can close the window or turn off the computer at any time.
