...not? Discuss.? Please take the time to seriously consider the question.
to peskyz... i'm well aware of the historical events that have led to the varying legal status and subsequent priority for enforcement for just about every recreational psychotropic known to man, it was meant to be a discussion.
this is yahoo answers. if i wanted to just do the research then why would i be here???
but i HAVE done the research, this is more to see varying opinions/attitudes about the issue
to the guy below peskyz...
good input... alcohol is only allowed due to the failure of prohibition (mob violence and failure to control alcohol were good reasons not to continue the prohibition) it actually lists alcohol as a schedule I in the Controlled Substances Act (Substances that are highly addictive, unhealthy, and have no legitimate medical purpose) but it is written in as an exception due to the failure of prohibition.
Tobacco is another story. This country was built by tobacco, while it is a dying industry today (people are starting to realize how dangerous and disgusting it is) at one point it brought a great amount of british money into this country.
This country was built by tobacco and slavery.
however, we freed the slaves, we didn't outlaw tobacco.

although tobacco may be legal in the state of california, it is still completely illegal in the united states (of which california is a part) and can be full prosecuted regardless of state law. (Federal law supercedes state law)
in fact many medical marijuana patients have been raided and incarcerated by the DEA for growing/possessing something for which they have a valid prescription written by a licensed medical doctor.
typo above, tobacco should read cannabis regarding california medical cannabis.
another interesting point is that hemp (which is less psychoactive than cannabis and not at all fun or recreational or medicinal for that matter) is also illegal, while it is a very valuable crop and has a myriad of purposes.
