why american students are such horrible spellers?

I cannot understand why most schools failing their students on this matter. Every time I see another student writing 'here' instead of 'hear' because he or she just doesn't know the difference, it's so sad. Knowledge IS a power and the best way to achieve one's dreams, become someone. It's one thing to shorten words and use slang when you text or twit, but to misspell because you didn't try hard at school? Pathetic.
