Why am I so paralysed with fear about chatting to a girl on facebook?

To cut a long story short, there is a girl in college who I really like and pretty confident she likes me (we used to always make eye contact). I never spoke to her but added her on facebook (she was on friends list). This was a few months back and I have now finished college for good. All I have done is think about this girl and just keep saying I am going to chat to her on facebook. However, when she is on, I just feel absolutely paralysed with fear. It is as though just clicking her name and saying hello is the hardest thing in the world. I just can't work out why I am so afraid to speak to her. I don't know if it is fear of rejection, embarassment, or something else. Thing is, if things don't go to well and she just ain't interested I will never see her again anyway, so I just can't workout why I am so afriad to speak on a computer. It just does not make sense. Just clicking her name and saying hi just feels impossible to do. I just don't know why it is so hard.
