My dad always scolds me for starting up the car and then driving it right away. Says that's not the way to do it. He says it's better if I let the engine warm up first.
Who's right?

In a very broad way you are both right...in warm weather a car will circulate oil all thru the engine in about 2 to 5 seconds, so by the time you get it in gear and back out, it's fine...here's the tricky part, in very cold winter weather it can be a good preventive measure to let the car idle for up to 30 seconds to let it warm some...

The first few seconds after starting is the worst, because the oil is thick and still down in the pan. So most wear occurs at this time, when the bearings are "dry".

So it may be a good idea to let the oil thin a bit before reving the engine too hard, but shouldent take very long.
If you keep the RPMs reasonable for a minute, I wouldent worry.

When the engine is cold, it will run rich ( extra fuel to air ratio).
This will waste a bit more fuel for the same horse power, but I dont see it as particularly damaging.
