Unless something very unexpected happens, Brian Williams will probably continue anchoring the NBC Nightly News for at least 10 more years. Thanks to the ratings boost that Katie Couric got after her interview with Sarah Palin, Katie's job as CBS Evening News anchor is probably safe until at least September 2011, when her current contract expires.
In all likelihood, the next change among the "Big Three" will be when Charles Gibson retires from ABC.
Once Charlie retires, who should succeed him as anchor? As I see it, ABC can go a number of ways...
They could give Diane Sawyer the opportunity to anchor, but only for 2-3 years as most.
They could allow Bob Woodruff to retake the anchor chair, if he is physically and mentally ready to do so. If Charlie does not retire for another 2 or 3 years, Bob will be close to age 50 by that time, and may only anchor for 10-12 years, due in part to his injuries from Iraq.
They could look at one of their younger rising stars (David Muir is the name that comes up the most, but also Dan Harris and Jake Tapper), who could potentially anchor for 20+ years.
They could also try to bring someone from outside the network. While Anderson Cooper's name would almost certainly come up, a far better pick in my opinion would be Lester Holt, who anchors NBC's Weekend Today and the Saturday and Sunday editions of NBC Nightly News.
