That's entirely possible. However, if human civilization DOES end, it will likely be as a result of natural causes, rather than either divine intervention OR artificial means.

Man by either global thermonuclear war or destroying the environment.
I study the dispositions of Russian nukes all day for My job, that may have colored My outlook.

My culture says this is the 4th civilization to reach a technological age. All previous ones being wiped out by natural disasters. There is no reason or evidence to suggest that this time we will be any luckier than previous attempts to get past group mentality.
