Who was the author of this poem and short story?

When I was in 10th grade (back in the 70's) we had required reading of a short story I believe called "The Dance", but I'm not positive. It was about a young woman forced to dance with a man she didn't know and couldn't decide if she liked. As I remember it, the story was about how she would carry on a civil conversation with him during the dance, while thinking all sorts of insults and how much she didn't want to dance with him. I was laughing hysterically the whole time I was reading it, while every one else around me thought I was nuts. Obviously they had no imagination and had never been in any type of situation like that before.

The author also wrote the poem "Resumé", and I do remember the words for it:

Razors pain you,
rivers are damp.
Acids stain you,
drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren't lawful,
nooses give.
Gas smells awful,
you might as well live.

Thanks for any help!
You rock Katy! It is her and I was able to find the name of the story! It's called "The Waltz", and I wasn't able to find a link for it online. Sorry. But you *definitely* have to read it! We were reading aloud that day and everyone was reading in monotone. I felt like I was in a room of zombies. You'll see what I mean when you read it.
