For years the title of cook extraordinaire belonged to my paternal Grandma. She was amazing, she made everything herself, including her own candy! She made breakfast daily for her family and dinner, all while working as an aviation engineer.
She made the worlds best mashed potato's, when I would ask her how she made them she would always just smile and say it was her secret. I spent years tooling with my mashed potato's never quite getting it right. Then one day I hit on it, I wasn't even trying I had just tried a tip I found in some obscure magazine and the first taste I got so excited I jumped up and down. I ran to my mom with the spoon and said to her "whose potato's does this taste like" and with eyes wide she responded "you grandmother's!". Now it's my secret, I wished that I could have called her to tell her that I figured it out, she would have laughed because it really was so simple.
But now that she has passed I will have to say that the best cook is me, now people stand over my pots asking what I put in them, and I can smile and say that it's my secret.
